New York – The Monroe College men's soccer team improved to 12-0 on the year with a 1-0 victory over friendly rival ASA at Pier 5 in Brooklyn on Friday. The win over the Avengers kept Monroe's record against ranked opponents unblemished for the season.
In a defensive battle that saw only five total shots, it was a second-half marker that determined the winner. The first half saw just two shots, both from the Mustangs. The second attempt, by
Felipe Hideki, hit the crossbar and nearly went into the net, but the game was scoreless at the half.
Ignacio Goya nearly got Monroe on the board 10 minutes into the second half, but his shot hit the post and went wide. The Mustangs finally broke through just past the hour mark when
Evan Finnegan put a ball into the box that
Ben Mardones blasted home.
The Monroe College men's soccer team will conclude the regular season on Wednesday, October 19, when they face Nassau Community College in Garden City. The kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm.
