New Rochelle, N.Y. - The former Alma College head baseball coach, Scott Kingston will join Monroe College as the new Baseball Coach and Director of Strength and Conditioning, effective, December 1, 2015. Kingston replaces former Mustangs Head Coach, Lou Melendez, whom is assuming the Director of Athletics position at Monroe on a full time basis.
Coach Kingston arrives in New Rochelle with a myriad of experience behind him. He joined Alma College in 2012 and in his time there, the Scots improved in wins in every season. Under his stewardship, a foundation was laid that saw the team go from 11 victories in his first year, to 20-wins and a .500 record in his most recent season.
Prior to his time in Michigan, Kingston was the Associate Head Coach at NCAA Division II, Palm Beach Atlantic University. While there, he assisted in all aspects of the program, including hitting, team offense and overall recruiting.
Kingston has connections to the local area. In addition to having a roster at Alma that including nine New York area players, Kingston served as the Head Coach at Mitchell College in New London, Connecticut, in 2011.
At Mitchell, Kingston led the team to the school's first regular season and tournament championship, and its first trip to an NCAA regional. The team finished number one in the nation in hitting and slugging percentage, and fourth in home runs. He brought in 10 new student athletes in his first five months, including one that went on to play professional baseball. Along with coaching, Kingston served as a member of the Division III New England Regional Advisory Committee.
Kingston has also seen time at the junior college level. He took the assistant baseball coach/recruiting coordinator position at Indian River State College in Ft. Pierce, Florida, in 2010.
One of his main responsibilities at Indian River was to create and implement an athletic training program for the varsity athletes.
In 2009, as an assistant coach at Division III Keystone College, in Pennsylvania, Kingston commanded a lineup that finished first in the nation in runs scored, eighth in home runs and sixth in team batting average. During his time at Keystone, the program was ranked as high as fourth in the country and advanced to the 2009 NCAA Regional tournament. The squad ended the season with an impressive 40-6 record, which was the highest winning percentage of any school at any level in the country.
He began his coaching career at Frostburg State University (MD) in 2000, where he was assistant baseball coach/recruiting coordinator until after the 2002 season.
As a coach and mentor, Kingston has coached 36 players that have gone on to play professional baseball. One of the most notable athletes he counseled was 2011 first round draft pick Cory Spangenberg. The second baseman was selected by the San Diego Padres.
Kingston reflected on what the position means to him: "I thank Lou Melendez and the administration for the opportunity. I look forward to contributing to the athletic program and to enhance the student-athlete experience at Monroe."
He continued, "This was a good fit. Coach Melendez did a great job building the program. I look forward to finishing what he started. I am very proud to be a Mustang. I know what the program is all about and how to continue to have success."
Kingston was drafted out of Columbus (Ga.) High School, where he won three state championships while earning all-state honors, in 1995 by the New York Yankees. In addition to his responsibilities as baseball coach, Kingston will oversee the entire strength and conditioning program for the College. He will work with all 12 varsity teams to implement sports specific training methods. Kingston is a 2000 graduate of Columbus State University. He is married and has one son.
