Connor Moriarty

Connor Moriarty was named Head Coach of the Monroe College Mustangs softball team in June 2022. Moriarty comes up to New Rochelle after a highly successful four-year stint with the Monroe Express, serving as the program's first-ever head coach.

Moriarty takes the reigns for the Mustangs softball team from Samantha Santillo, who coached the Mustangs for four years beginning in 2019 (played just three games in 2020). Moriarty’s accomplishments with the Monroe College-Bronx softball team made it an easy decision to have him fill Monroe’s Division I softball head coaching vacancy.

Moriarty was named the first head coach in the history of the Monroe Express softball team in 2018 ahead of the program’s inaugural season in 2019. He was tasked with building the program from scratch, and managed to bring the Express to the national stage in just the team’s third season of competition in 2022.

The 2022 season was nothing short of historic for the Monroe Express. Moriarty’s squad finished with a 27-16 overall record, an unprecedented 24-win improvement from a 3-17 season in 2021. The Express won their first-ever NJCAA Div. III Region 15 Championship after defeated then No. 5-ranked Suffolk County Community College in a three-game series. Monroe went on to sweep a best-of-three series at Butler County Community College to claim the program’s first Northeast District Championship.

As the Northeast District Champions, the Express earned their first opportunity to compete in the NJCAA Div. III Softball Championship tournament in DeWitt, N.Y. The Express drew the No. 8 seed ahead of the eight-team tournament, pitting Monroe against the seven-time defending champion Rock Valley College in the opening round. The Express played the Golden Eagles tough, with just one rough inning being the difference in a 10-3 loss to Rock Valley. The Express then faced off with No. 4 Herkimer College in an elimination game, but were unable to take down the tournament hosts, falling 4-1 to end the Express' title aspirations. Monroe got one more chance for a win at the tournament in a seventh-place game against No. 6 Middlesex. The Express played their game from start-to-finish, defeating the Colts, 3-0, to earn the team's first ever NJCAA Championship win.

For their efforts in the 2022 campaign, Moriarty, along with assistant coaches Leidaly Garcia, Stephanie Barbaro, Anastasia Pennacchio and Mike Labella, were named the 2022 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NJCAA Div. III National Coaching Staff of the Year. Moriarty was also awarded the honor of 2022 NJCAA Div. III Softball Northeast District Coach of the Year ahead of the 2022 NJCAA Div. III Softball Championship. In addition to the incredible on-field success, Moriarty’s teams have also never had a combined GPA below 3.00.

2022 also saw the Express earn its first two NJCAA Div. III Softball All-America honorees. Pitcher Toni Shawnee and outfielder Cinthia Ramirez both earned their spots on the 202 NJCAA Div. III Softball All-America Second Team after a pair of incredible seasons for the Express. The Express also landed eight student-athletes on the 2022 NJCAA Div. III Region 15 All-Region Team.

Moriarty grew up in athletics, as his father, Barry Moriarty, was the long-time Director of Sports Medicine at Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y., leading to Connor completing his higher education at Pace. While serving in numerous roles throughout his undergrad and post-grad with the Setters’ athletic department, Moriarty eventually became an assistant coach with the softball team from 2016-18. As assistant coach, Moriarty primarily coached hitting and defense, with his key roles being individual instruction and player development. During his tenure at Pace, Moriarty helped guide the Setters to the No. 2 seed in the 2017 Northeast 10 Conference Tournament. He also helped coach and develop the 2018 team that went on to qualify for the 2018 NCAA Division II Championship Tournament.

In his move from the Bronx to New Rochelle, Moriarty will also be assisting in the Mustangs’ events and facilities department with the athletic operations staff.

Moriarty earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration (’16) and his master’s degree in public administration from Pace University (’18). He is a native of Poughquag, N.Y. and currently resides in Port Chester, N.Y.
