Having a proven track record of success on special teams and the defensive side the ball, defensive coordinator/associate head Johan Williams just completed his fifth season with the Mustangs in 2019.
During his tenure, the defense has been elevated to be one of the tops in the country finishing no lower than ninth nationally the past four seasons. In 2017, the Mustangs finished with the No. 1-ranked defense in the country at the NJCAA level, while posting an 8-2 record on the year. The stingy rush defense did not a allow a runner to reach the century mark in 25 straight games (9/3/16 – 10/13/18).
Prior to joining the Monroe College staff, Williams spent five seasons overseas coaching in Denmark. During his time there he was the special team’s coordinator and defensive line coach for team Denmark, which competed in international games. During his with the national team in Denmark, the team reached the rank of sixth in Europe out of 41 our national teams winning the European Championship in the B division in 2013, the highest Denmark was ever ranked, along with its first European championship.
Williams also coached a national team, the Herlev Rebels, in which he had turned a program around into becoming a perennial playoff team, reaching the postseason four times and the semifinals twice. Under Williams, the Rebels went on to their winningest season in team history with a 9-3 record in 2012.Â
Before Williams went overseas, he made a four-year stop at Wagner College with legendary coach Walt Hameline, where he coached the defensive line and was also the special team’s coordinator. During his time there, his special teams units consistently finished in the Top-20 in the nation statistically for production.
Williams' first college position was at Iona College under Fred Mariani, where he once again coached the defensive line and was also the special teams coordinator. In 2005, Williams' special teams unit ranked No. 1 in punt defense, only allowing 2.2 yards per return. His special teams unit also finished 18th in punting, and 11th in kickoff coverage.
