Ayala enters his eighth season with the Monroe Mustangs and his fourth with the Mustangs’ baseball team.
Ayala began coaching for the Mustangs’ softball team in January 2013 spending one season as the team’s Assistant Coach before joining the Mustangs’ baseball staff in 2014. Ayala has served as the Mustangs' assistant coach, specializing in hitting since then.
A native of the Bronx, N.Y., Ayala graduated from Alfred E. Smith High School and played one season at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant, Texas before being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 23rd round of the 1998 MLB Draft. Ayala spent six seasons with the Brewers’ organization, before joining the Independent ranks.
Ayala played in the Northern, Frontier and Can-Am Leagues before catching on with the Somerset Patriots in 2006. Ayala played six seasons for the Patriots, winning back-to-back Atlantic League Championships in 2008 and 2009. He was also named one of the Top 20 Somerset Patriots of All-Time in 2017, ranking as the No. 9 player in the team's history.
Ayala retired from professional baseball in 2012 after 15 seasons across the minor and independent leagues.
Ayala currently lives in Greenwich, Conn., with his wife Maggie and daughter Penelope.
