Staten Island, NY – The Monroe University men's indoor track and field team made its season debut at the Wagner College Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon. Sophomore
Dwayne Fleming shined for the Mustangs placing first overall in the men's 400m.
The sophomore from Antigua and Barbuda recorded a time of 48.37, just 0.11 away from the NJCAA national qualification mark of 48.26. His podium placement set the tone for a solid outing for the Mustangs in their season opener.
Sophomore
Junior Grant made his season debut in the 500m on Friday, placing second overall with a time of 1:06.09, a personal best. Freshman
Anthony Barrett joined Grant in the 500m with a time of 1:09.51, while sophomore
Nickoy Henry recorded a 1:12.96 in the event.
Several more Mustangs made their collegiate debuts at the Wagner College Invitational. Freshmen Elijas Carswell (24.38),
Felixon Elubin (24.54) and
Douglas Lee (24.78) made their marks in the 200m dash.
In the 60m dash, Lee ran a time of 7.62, which was followed closely by sophomore
Davionn Thomas (7.63) and Elubin (7.78). Freshman
Cleon Joseph joined Fleming in the 400m with a time of 52.39 to mark his collegiate debut.
Lastly, the Mustangs had two competitors in the long jump, with freshman
Elijah Upsher (5.98m) and sophomore
Joel Bennett (5.27m) showing out for Monroe.
The Mustangs will next compete on Friday, January 10 at the St. Thomas Spartan Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
