NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.–Monroe University Mustangs freshman Shaquane Toussaint captured USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association) Athlete of the Week on February 2. This is the first Athlete of the Week honor for the Grenada native.
Toussaint's first two collegiate races ended the same way: both in victory at Boston University's John Thomas Terrier Classic.
In both instances, he became the season's indoor NJCAA leader, along with setting a pair of program records.
On Saturday, Toussaint began his activities at 10:30 a.m. for the invitational 400 meters. Competing in the second section, his 46.42 claimed the overall lead and moved him to No. 12 on the all-time NJCAA indoor list. In the following section, teammate Modou Sanneh took second place at 46.58, achieving the No. 19 spot all-time in NJCAA rankings.
Toussaint ran his 200-meter race in lane five about two hours later, clocking in at 21.00. The only NJCAA performances that are faster this indoor season have come outdoors.
This is the third time that a male athlete from the Mustangs has been named male or female National Athlete of the Week during the indoor season. Toussaint joins Mohlouwa Koos Molutsi (2022) and Jaymes Dennison (2016) in that regard.
Toussaint and the rest of the Mustangs return to action on Friday, February 6, when they head to the Scarlet Knights Open.
