Monroe Mustangs Track and Field Doubles up Weekend Meets at TCNJ Lions Invitational

EWING, N.J., April 27, 2024 – While some members of the Monroe College Mustangs women's and men's track and field teams competed at the Penn Relays on Friday and Saturday, the majority of the team was in action at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Lions Invitational on Saturday.
 
WOMEN
The women's team got its big highlight of the day in the long jump, as D'Jior Delisser took first place overall in the event with a personal-best jump of 5.80 meters. Her performance qualifies her for the event at the 2024 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Akayla Pickersgill joined Delisser in the long jump, registering a distance of 4.63 meters.
 
Julihanna Johnson ran in the women's 400-meter dash open on Saturday. She ran a time of 1:06.31.
 
Kahliyah Smith and Paula Orusede both competed in the 100-meter hurdles open. Smith finished the race with a time of 15.24 seconds, while Orusede finished in 16.21 seconds. Both also rand in the 400-meter hurdles. Orusede earned a new PR time of 1:07.32. Smith finished with a time of 1:14.96.
 
Rahmat Showa-Olafatia competed in the women's shot put. She threw a distance of 10.85 meters.
 
MEN
Omari Sewell ran in the men's 1,500-meter run. He finished the race in 4:41.79.
 
Chazz Alexander represented Monroe in the 100-meter dash. He finished with a time of 11.50 seconds.
 
A pair of Mustangs competed in the 200-meter dash open. Alexander led the way with a time of 22.70 seconds for a new season-best. Junior Grant ran his first 200m, finishing in 23.03 seconds.
 
Zeemarley Felix and Davionn Thomas both ran in the 400-meter dash open on Saturday. Felix finished the race in 51.48 seconds. Thomas earned a new season-best time at 56.67 seconds.
 
Nickoy Henry took his turn in the 400-meter hurdles. He finished the race with a time of 1:00.60.
 
Sewell also ran in the 800-meter run on Saturday. He clocked in at 2:10.83.
 
Joel Bennett and Jayson Burchell competed in a pair of field events each on Saturday. In the triple jump, Burchell took second place overall with a personal-best jump of 13.64 meters. Bennett registered a jump of 12.43 meters.
 
Both competed in the long jump as well on Saturday. Burchell made a jump of 6.37 meters, while Bennett set a new PR at 6.05 meters.
 
The Mustangs now have just one regular-season meet left on the outdoor schedule. Next Saturday, May 4, the Mustangs will compete at the Tom Farrell Classic, hosted by St. John's University in Queens, N.Y. That will be the team's final tune-up before the 2024 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships down in Louisiana later in May.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
