Moloisi’s Big Day Highlights Monroe Mustangs Men’s Track and Field’s Outing at Morgan State Legacy Meet

BALTIMORE, Md., April 20, 2024Kgaogelo Moloisi earned his first qualifying time of the season as well as a second strong performance on Saturday to highlight the day for the Monroe College Mustangs men's track and field team at the Morgan State University Legacy Meet.
 
Moloisi earned his first qualification for the 2024 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. Moloisi won the 1,500-meter run, clocking in at 3:55.70 to earn his spot at the NJCAA Championships as well as take first place out of 28 runners in the race. Moloisi was joined by Tinashe Bure and Siyabonga Mbatha in the event. Bure finished sixth with a time of 4:02.08, while Mbatha crossed the line in 4:09.04 to place 12th.
 
Moloisi later competed in the 800-meter run and turned in another big time. He ran a personal-best time of 1:54.04, narrowly missing qualification in the event by less than a second, but taking third place overall in the event. Three more Mustangs ran in the event as well. Bure was right behind Moloisi with a fifth-place time of 1:55.54. Mbatha ran a time of 1:58.39 in the race. Omari Sewell clocked in at 2:13.39.
 
Five Mustangs ran in the 400-meter dash on Saturday. Chazz Alexander was Monroe's top finisher, running a time of 49.87 seconds. Junior Grant was close behind with a personal-best time of 50.45 seconds. Zeemarley Felix ran a time of 51.22 seconds. Nickoy Henry finished in 53.81, while Davionn Thomas crossed the line in 56.99 seconds.
 
Later, three Mustangs participated in the 200-meter dash. Alexander was the top finisher again for Monroe with a time of 22.40 seconds. Henry was next at 23.13 seconds. Lloyd Haywood Jr. then crossed the line in 23.80 seconds.
 
Mehdi Guerrah competed in the 400-meter hurdles. He ran a time of 57.29 seconds to claim fourth place overall.
 
Banele Mkabela ran his first-ever collegiate 5,000-meter run. He ran a time of 15:46.12 to take fifth place on the day.
 
The Mustangs had two competitors in the triple jump on Saturday. Jayson Burchell jumped a distance of 13.46 meters, while Joel Bennett registered a jump of 12.18 meters.
 
The Mustangs will compete in the prestigious Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa., next weekend. The three-day meet with competitors of all levels begins on Thursday, April 25.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
