NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 20, 2021 – In the team's first games in more than a year, the Monroe College Mustangs softball dropped a pair to Herkimer College on Saturday at Flowers Park. The Mustangs start the season 0-2, while Herkimer opens up at 2-0.

GAME 1: Herkimer 17, Monroe 3 (5 INN)
The Generals took an early lead and did not look back in Game 1, taking a 13-0 advantage after the top of the fourth. The Mustangs brought in two runs on an error in the home half of the fourth, but the Generals added to their lead with four more in the fifth.
Brianna Nunez knocked in another run for the Mustangs with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but it was not enough to extend the game.

Madison Ihnat got the win for the Generals to start the year 1-0.
Angelina Perez shouldered the defeat for the Mustangs to drop to 0-1.

GAME 2: Herkimer 12, Monroe 1 (6 INN)
It was a slower start for both teams in Game 2, but the Generals once again took the early edge with five runs over their first four at-bats. An inside-the-park homer on an line drive into right center by
Brenda Rodriguez got the Mustangs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but the Generals added seven more runs in the sixth to close out the game.

Hannah DeRock grabbed the win for Herkimer to start her year 1-0.
Naidely Cabrera took the loss for the Mustangs despite only allowing three earned runs across six frames.

Rodriguez finished 1-for-3 with her solo homer in the game. Nunez hit 2-for-2 in the loss.
Katherine Garcia hit 1-for-1, while
Mya Jack went 1-for-2.

The Mustangs will look to put Saturday behind them quickly, as they get back to work Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader against Suffolk County Community College at Flowers Park. The home doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 17 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
