SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va., November 7, 2021 – On the second and final day of the Statesmen Classic, hosted by Richard Bland College, the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team lost a tight game to Brunswick Community College, 78-74, Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs fall to 1-1 after opening weekend, while the Dolphins improve to 1-0.
Melvin Council Jr. and
Hamdel Mohammed matched with a team-high 19 points in the game. Mohammed pulled down nine rebounds, while Council grabbed six.
Tyje Kelton registered his first-career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Braelon Joe led the team with four assists to go with five points and two steals.
The Mustangs shot better from the field in Saturday's game, making 29-of-65 field goals (44.6 percent, while the Dolphins made 30-of-71 (42.3 percent), but the difference was seven made three-pointers for the Dolphins, while Monroe made just one. Brunswick turned the ball over one more time than the Mustangs (16-15).
The Mustangs will next play in their home opener on Saturday, Nov. 13, when they host the Mustang Classic at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Monroe will take on Hagerstown Community College at 7 p.m. that evening, following Mercer County Community College vs. SUNY Sullivan.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
