ODESSA, Texas, November 5, 2021 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team lost its final game at the Odessa College Tip-Off Classic on Friday, falling to Midland College, 82-44, at the OC Sports Center. The Mustangs head home 0-3 overall, while Midland improves to 2-0.
Midland jumped out to a double-digit lead early in Friday's contest. Baskets by
Naomi Barnwell and
Aniyyah Watson had the Mustangs back within six with 40 seconds left, but the Chaps scored twice in down the stretch to take a 24-14 lead into the second quarter. The Chaps went on another big run in the second quarter, outscoring the Mustangs, 20-5, to go into the half with a 44-19 advantage.
Midland kept its pace up in the third quarter, extending the lead to 63-32 after 30 minutes. It continued again in the fourth, as they eventually reached the final score of 82-44.
Barnwell led the Mustangs with 12 points, three assists and three steals in Friday's contest.
Olivia Medford,
Daja Wentz and
Aysia Pink added eight points apiece, while Wentz led Monroe with six rebounds and matched Barnwell with three assists.
The Mustangs will play their home opener on Thursday, Nov. 11, when they host Raritan Valley Community College at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
