MELBOURNE, Fla., October 1, 2021 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team picked up its second straight win down in Florida and its 15th victory in a row after defeating Eastern Florida State College in three sets Friday evening at the Titan Field House. The Mustangs improve to 21-3 overall with the win, while the Titans drop to 4-9.
Friday's match got off to a back-and-forth start, seeing the Mustangs hold a narrow 11-10 advantage. The Mustangs then scored the next four points to go up by five. The Titans fought back, getting within two at 18-16, but the Mustangs picked up four in a row to take a 22-16 edge. The home team got as close as four down the stretch, as the Mustangs held on for a 25-19 win and a 1-0 lead on the evening.
The first set win gave the Mustangs a bunch of momentum heading into the second frame, as they rolled to a 9-1 lead right off the bat. The Titans chipped away to make it 12-7, but the Mustangs kept their distance as they inched closer to 25 points. A 20-14 lead for Monroe quickly turned into a 25-16 win for the Mustangs, giving them a 2-0 edge in the match.
The third frame started off with a 7-7 stalemate before the Mustangs took 4-of-5 to take a 12-8 edge. A four-point run made it 16-9, and another one put Monroe ahead, 20-11. The Titans followed by taking eight of the next 10 points to get within three at 22-19, but the Mustangs rebounded after a timeout to take the final three points for a 25-19 win and a 3-0 victory for the night.
Leanisse Solano once again led Monroe with 13 kills on the night, adding six digs and three aces.
Masoomeh Angooti followed with 10 kills and two aces.
Alondra Ramos threw down eight kills and added a block.
Alisha Callender led the team with 15 assists, adding 10 digs, six kills and a pair of aces.
Lyanis Rios dished out 13 assists, served up two aces and picked up six digs.
Laura Paniagua led the team with 24 digs while also passing around nine assists and serving up three aces.
The Mustangs will play twice in two different locations on Saturday, Oct. 2, to wrap up the Florida trip. They start the day at No. 15 Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla., at 10 a.m., before trekking over to Venice, Fla., to take on State College of Florida at 4 p.m.
