NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 28, 2019 – A year after Bunker Hill Community College ruined spoiled Monroe's perfect start to the season with a 1-1 draw, the No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team made sure the Bulldogs would not do it again, rolling to a 6-2 victory Saturday evening at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park. The Mustangs remain unbeaten at 8-0 with the win, while the Bulldogs fall to 5-4-1.
The Mustangs started fast, with
Roque Viegas scoring off an assist from
Tobias Pellio at the 1:39 mark for a quick 1-0 lead. Viegas set up
Luca Erhardt for his first of the day shortly after in the ninth minute to make it a 2-0 game. Pellio then sent a perfect cross right in front of the goal in the 14th minute, where
Mitch Dobson laid out for a header to punch it in and push the Mustangs' lead to three. Bunker Hill then got on the board at 24:42 on a goal by David Name, cutting the deficit to 3-1, which it remained heading into the halftime break.
The Mustangs once again came flying out of the gates in the second half.
Rintaro Takagi fired one in from outside the box in the 50th minute to make it a 4-1 lead for Monroe. Erhardt then scored his second of the day, once again set up by Viegas, at 54:06 to push the lead to 5-1. Four minutes later,
Leon Sitz fired one right past the keeper from the right side of the box to put the Mustangs up, 6-1. Bunker Hill's Arnaud Abdoun got one back in the 81st minute, but that was it for the scoring, as the Mustangs held on for the 6-2 victory.
Victor Camps made two saves and allowed two goals to earn the win for Monroe and improve to 4-0 on the year. Bunker Hill starter Pedro Zampilli-Ambrosio took the loss after giving up three goals in the first half to fall to 1-2.
Erhardt tallied two goals to improve his season total to 19. Viegas finished with four points on a goal and two assists. Dobson, Sitz and Takagi had the other three goals for the Mustangs, while Pellio had two assists and
Daniel Haegler had one.
The Mustangs outshot the Bulldogs, 27-4, including a 14-4 edge in shots on goal in the win. The Mustangs also had seven corner kicks, while the Bulldogs had just two.
The Mustangs return to action for their Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Flowers Park in New Rochelle. The Mustangs will host No. 10 Mercer County Community College for a 7 p.m. kickoff to close out the Homecoming festivities.
