Eaton’s Triple-Double Lifts Monroe Mustangs Men’s Basketball to 35-Point Victory over Allegany

HAGERSTOWN, Md., December 1, 2019 – A triple-double by freshman Ja'mani Eaton highlighted a 94-59 victory for the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team over Allegany College of Maryland on Sunday in the team's final matchup at the Jim Brown Classic, hosted by Hagerstown Community College. The Mustangs improve to 6-2 and have won four straight games, while the Trojans fall to 4-7.

Eaton registered his best day so far as a Mustang in Sunday's big win over Allegany. He finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists to complete the triple-double, while also justifiably playing a season-high 37 minutes in his first career start. The Mustangs also got another pair of big games from Jeremiah Kendall and Zion Styles. Kendall finished with 26 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing his fourth double-double of the year. Styles had another efficient game, shooting 9-of-12 from the field and 3-of-3 from long range to finish with 22 points.

The Mustangs fell into an early 14-6 hole five minutes into the first half. Monroe rebounded with a 13-2 run, taking a 19-16 edge with 11:46 left in the half. Both teams played pretty evenly for the next five minutes, with the Mustangs holding a 27-26 lead with 6:32 on the clock. Eight straight points by Monroe then put the Mustangs up by nine, and they eventually led by 11 with just 28 seconds left in the half. A technical foul late in the period allowed Allegany to take, and make, four straight free throws, leaving the Mustangs up, 39-32, at the break.

Eaton was already on his way to the triple-double with four points, seven assists and five boards in the first half. Kendall led all scorers with 16 points at the break, adding six rebounds.

A dunk by Zion Styles three minutes into the second half gave the Mustangs a double-digit lead, which led to the Mustangs leading by no less than 10 points the rest of the way. After leading 53-43, Monroe went on a 14-4 run to double the lead to 20 points with 10 minutes to play. Monroe led, 72-59, with 6:20 on the clock, and did not allow a single point the rest of the game, going on a 22-0 run to close it out for a 35-point victory.

Styles' 22-point day included a huge 19-point second half. He also finished with seven rebounds and a team-high three steals. The Mustangs got 14 points from Marcus Thompson off the bench. The Mustangs shot 50.7 percent from the field (36-of-71) in the win, including 61.1 percent (22-of-36) in the second half. The Mustangs dominated under the rim with a 54-24 advantage in points in the paint, as well as a 17-10 edge in second-chance points.

The Mustangs return to action this coming weekend when they host the Monroe College Roundball Classic at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Monroe will open its weekend against Macomb Community College on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. The Mustangs will then take on Monroe Community College on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m.
