No. 6 Monroe Women’s Soccer Plays to 2-2 Draw with No. 1 Eastern Florida State

ROCHESTER, N.Y., September 14, 2018 – Less than 24 hours after a statement victory over No. 10 Monroe Community College, the No. 6-ranked Monroe College women's soccer team went neck-and-neck with No. 1 Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) on Friday. After the Mustangs scored a late equalizer, the battle of Top-10 teams played to a 2-2 draw after double overtime at John L. DiMarco field. The Mustangs move to 5-0-1 on the season with the draw, while the Titans go to 3-0-1.

Coming off a three-goal game the day before, Maria Santin kicked off the scoring in Friday's contest after following up her own shot and getting it past the keeper in the 29th minute to give Monroe an early 1-0 lead.

EFSC's Klesha Darroux knotted things up at 1-1 at the 41:43 mark off an assist from Sophia Kenny, eventually sending the game to the half with a 1-1 tie.

The Titans got back on the board early in the second frame. Keli Lindquist hit the back of the net after another assist from Kenny, giving EFSC a 2-1 lead just four minutes into the new half.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Titans until Laia Munoz Danon scored a clutch goal in the 84th minute off a pass from Santin, eventually sending the game to overtime.

The Titans had some momentum during the first overtime period. EFSC had four different scoring opportunities in the extra period, but all four times, goalkeeper Marta Alemany stayed poised and made the save, keeping things tied and sending it to a second overtime.

The Titans once again were on the offensive in the second overtime. Darroux had a chance inside the box, but Alemany once again made the stop. Aida Illas later tried a shot from in close, but sent it wide to the left. Neither team was able to get a single shot off in the final seven minutes of the game, resulting in the 2-2 finish.

Alemany moves to 5-0-1 on the season after making six saves, five of which came in overtime, in the draw. EFSC goalkeeper Kiera Gibson made two saves in the draw.

Santin improved upon her team lead in goals and points on Friday, scoring once and assisting the other Mustang goal. She now leads the team with 11 goals and 23 points through six games. Munoz Danon netted her fourth goal of the season late in the second half.

The Mustangs get back to work on Friday, Sept. 21, when they visit Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. The game is set to kick off at 3 p.m.
