BALTIMORE, Md., August 26, 2018 – The No. 16-ranked Monroe College women's soccer team capped off a highly impressive weekend at the CCBC-Essex Knights Soccer Kickoff Classic on Sunday, storming past No. 8 Harford Community College by a score of 9-1. The Mustangs improve to 2-0 on the early season with the win, while the Fighting Owls fall to 1-1. Monroe wraps up the weekend having scored an impressive 19 goals in two games.
Freshman
Maria Santin had an impressive afternoon, netting three goals for her first collegiate hat trick. She finishes the weekend with a team-high five goals scored.
Juliana Pires picked up a five-point day, scoring once and dishing out three assists. Pires leaves Baltimore leading the team with 11 points in two games.
Laia Munoz Danon also had a big day, scoring twice and handing out an assist to match Pires' five points.
Yolanda Albalat picked up her first goal of the season, as well as her second assist.
Both teams played evenly through the first 15 minutes before the Mustangs began their big run. Munoz Danon netted the first goal of the day at the 15:09 mark, and Santin followed three minutes later to make it a 2-0 game. Pires made it 3-0 off a feed from Albalat in the 23rd minute to push the Mustangs up by tree.
Mayara Queiroz Reis capped off the first half by scoring in the 31st minute off Pires' second assist of the day, leaving the Mustangs up, 4-0, at the break.
Munoz Danon started the second half much like the first, scoring at the 53:42 mark off another assist from Pires to push the lead to five. Albalat then got on the board not even three minutes later to make it a 6-0 contest.
Kiana Leger and Santin both scored in the following three minutes to improve Monroe's lead to eight. Harford's Sommer Law scored in the 73rd minute to end the shutout, but Santin followed in the 89th minute with her third of the afternoon to finish off a 9-1 win.
Marta Alemany improved to 2-0 on the season after making a pair of saves in Sunday's win. Harford keeper Crystal Kline stopped eight shots, but allowed nine goals to fall to 1-1.
The Mustangs outshot the Fighting Owls, 21-7, on Sunday, including 17 shots on goal. Both teams matched with three corner kicks apiece.
The Mustangs continue the early season road stand on Thursday, Sept. 6, when they fly down to Daytona Beach, Fla., to take on No. 7 Daytona State College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
