NEWARK, N.J., November 3, 2018 – For the first time since reaching the National Semifinals back in 2015, the No. 2-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team is heading back to the NJCAA Div. I Women's Soccer National Championship Tournament after defeating No. 17 Harford Community College, 10-0, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field to claim the 2018 Northeast District Championship title. The Mustangs will enter the tournament with an unbeaten 12-0-1 record.
Much like Friday's contest,
Maria Santin got the scoring started for the Mustangs, taking a pass from
Yolanda Albalat in the box and rolling it past the keeper in the seventh minute to give Monroe an early 1-0 lead.
Laia Munoz Danon then scored her first of the day at the 12:22 mark to make it a 2-0 lead. Santin netted her second off a cross from
Angie Ponce into the box to push Monroe's lead to three in the 21st minute.
Three minutes later, Santin sent a long pass up to a streaking
Anya Donelan, who had nothing but the goalie in front of her, and shot it into the top-left corner of the net to make it a 4-0 game. Santin then completed her hat trick two minutes later to give Monroe a five-goal lead.
Munoz Danon picked up her second goal at the 31:57 mark to push the lead to six.
Juliana Pires then got in on the action at 43:03 to make it 7-0 as the game headed to halftime.
Kaitlyn Waterman opened the second half with her first goal of the season in the 55th minute, pushing Monroe's lead to eight.
Kayla Notarnicola netted one at 57:11 off an assist from
Alba Gonzalez to make it a nine-goal game, and Gonzalez followed up with an unassisted goal 46 seconds later to push Monroe's advantage to 10.
Marta Alemany made three saves in the first half to improve to 12-0-1 on the year.
Jazmin Alcaraz took over in the second half, making six stops without allowing a goal. Harford goalkeeper Brooke Murphy took the loss for the Fighting Owls to fall to 0-1.
The Mustangs are now heading to the 2018 NJCAA Div. I Women's Soccer National Championship Tournament, which takes place from Nov. 12-17 in Foley, Ala. at the Foley Sports Complex. Seeding and matchups will be announced in the coming days.
