Bronx, N.Y. – A day after the Monroe College JV Basketball team's strong comeback against Prestige Prep, the team nearly did it again in a game against Our Saviour Lutheran School in the Bronx. The team erased a 16-point deficit before falling in overtime, 91-87. They finished the season with a 13-17 record, advancing to the second round of the AIPGC playoffs.
Monroe held the lead very early on as buckets by
Kenwyn Christian and
James Brady put them up 4-2 less than two minutes into the game. Our Saviour came back to take the lead, but the Mustangs eventually tied the game again at 14-all thanks to a Christian put off a miss.
Lamontrell Rice put Monroe up 17-14 at 11:48 courtesy of one of his four three-pointers. OSL took control from there, regaining the lead and pushing the advantage up to as much as 16-points. They led at the half, 43-31, as the final four points of the half came from Christian and
Nolen Irby.
The Mustangs faced a double-digit deficit heading into the second half and, similar to their game against
Prestige Prep days earlier, rallied with a spirited defensive effort.
Andre Morgan cut the gap to 10 points with a pair of foul shots. After forcing a couple of turnovers, another basket from Morgan brought the score to 45-37 with 17:48 left. A layup from Rice off a feed from Christian made the score 72-71, Mustangs, with 3:47 left. The score went back and forth until a foul shot from Our Saviour tied the score at 78-78. Monroe missed a last-second layup attempt and the game went to overtime.
The extra session saw both sides hold the lead briefly. Eventually, Our Saviour led 89-85 with 0:29 left. A couple of free throws from Irby pulled the Mustangs to 89-87, but Old Saviour pulled ahead with a couple of fouls shots down the stretch. The final was 91-87.
Christian posted a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Rice had a season-high 20 points, while Morgan had another double-double (13 points, 11 bounds) and
