NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 7, 2017 – The No. 2 Monroe College men's soccer team stepped up in one of its toughest matchups of the season, turning in a 4-0 victory over No. 20 CCBC-Essex Saturday afternoon at City Park. The Mustangs remain undefeated, improving to 10-0-1 with the win, while the Knights fall to 10-3.
Carlos Rodriguez got the scoring started for the Mustangs when he scored off an assist from
Gabriel Machado in the 23rd minute of the game. 14 minutes later, Machado set up
Lucas Nishioka for a header goal from in close, to make it a 2-0 lead for the Mustangs, which they eventually took into the half.
In the 56th minute, Machado was able to score one of his own after being set up by Rodriguez to push Monroe's lead to three goals. The Mustangs added one more in the final minutes when
Valmend Marki netted his first goal of the year off an assist from
Matis Castillon, capping off a 4-0 win for Monroe.
Svyat Kozak improved to 6-0 on the season, and secured his fifth shutout of the year with a pair of saves. Machado finished with four points on a goal and a pair of assists in the win. Rodriguez scored a goal and added an assist, while Marki and Nishioka also scored in the game. Castillon picked up the assist on Marki's goal.
Monroe fired off 28 shots in the win, while holding the Knights to just seven, including an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams were even with five corner kicks apiece.
The Mustangs are back in action next Saturday, Oct. 14, when they host ASA College in a highly-anticipated Region XV matchup at City Park. The game set to begin under the lights at 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
