Hagerstown, MD – The Monroe College Men's Basketball team played a pair of hard-fought games over the weekend at the Jim Brown Classic, ultimately coming away with a 1-1 record. The team fell to Allegany College of Maryland in overtime, 83-79, then rebounded with a win over Hagerstown Community College, 73-70. The team is now 7-1 on the season.
Monroe fought fiercely against Allegany, coming off of a 47-36 score at the break and rallying in the second half to force overtime. They lost in the extra time, 83-79.
A
Hampus Ahlin layup at 8:44 of the first half gave Monroe its largest lead of the game, six points at 24-18. Allegany rallied from there, and turned the 6-point deficit into an 11-point halftime lead.
The Mustangs opened the second half with a 10-0 run to pull within a point, at 47-46.
Bryan Assie accounted for seven of the points, and
Felix Carlsson added three more. Monroe grabbed the lead inside of 14 minutes on a pair of foul shots from
Dani Koljanin.
The game was back and forth from there, with neither side getting a lead larger than five points. The game went into overtime, during which Allegany outscored Monroe 13-9 for the win.
In the loss, Koljanin led the team with 19 points and nine rebounds. Assie added 18 points, while
Tyler Ancrum totaled 11 points and 6 assists.
Monroe rebounded on Sunday to defeat the tournament's host, Hagerstown CC, 73-70. A
Donald Butler layup at 7:47 made the score 22-18 for Monroe, but Hagerstown rallied and closed out the half with a 15-11 run. For the second-straight contest, the Mustangs trailed at the half, this time 37-33.
The Hagerstown lead grew to eight in the second half, but Monroe rallied with a 7-0 run to pull within 43-42.
Clifton Tracey scored five points and
Christopher Burkley earned the other two. A Tracey three-pointer at 12:28 gave Monroe the lead for good. Monroe won, 73-70. Assie led the team with 18 points, while Tracey finished with 15.
The Monroe College Men's Basketball team will return to action on Thursday, December 1st, hosting Baltimore City Community College at 6:00 PM.
