Brooklyn, N.Y. – Thursday night's 18-point win in front of a raucous, hostile ASA partisan crowd at St. Joseph's College revealed the mental makeup of the team. In a game of ebbs and flows, Monroe never lost focus, echoing the "big picture" approach that head coach
Jeff Brustad repeated throughout the game, and the team went on to an 80-62 win.
Tyler Ancrum and
Kemar Campbell got the game going early on, as Ancrum picked up a couple of assists early with passes to Campbell for a pair of easy buckets. In fact, after the Avengers opened the scoring, Monroe responded with six-straight points. From there, ASA used the first five minutes of game time to build a six-point cushion when a layup at 14:50 made the score 14-8.
Baskets from
Shackquiel Scott,
Felix Carlsson and
Will Tavares quickly tied the score at 14-14 and forced ASA into a timeout. A
Lawahn Lewis free throw with 0:31 left gave Monroe its largest lead of the half, 35-26.
The advantage for Monroe grew to 21 points when a Tavares layup made the score 52-31 with 14:35 left in the half. Like all good rivalries, ASA would not go quietly, as the Avengers methodically chipped away at the lead, eventually getting as close as close as nine points, but a Carlsson layup late in the contest sealed the win for Monroe.
In the victory,
Taquan Givens, Tavares,
Lukas Landgren and
Jarron Chapman each scored ten points. Amcrum finished with nine points and five assists. The team is now 17-7 on the season. They return to action on Thursday, February 4, when they host Harcum.
