Over the years, much has been said about the Monroe Mustangs' spirit and determination, but perhaps nowhere was it more evident than last weekend in Baltimore as the men's basketball team won the District Championship there, earning the title of District 3 champions and a place in the upcoming nationals to be held in Hutchinson, KS.
With its remarkable winning percentage of .742 since 1991, the Monroe Men's basketball program is firmly established as a powerhouse with no appetite for complacency. The upcoming nationals appearance marks a return to strength for the Mustangs who, despite a consistent national ranking and irrefutable potential, were unable to capitalize on their strengths and move into tournament play these past two seasons.
Coming off a strong showing at the Region XV tournament that saw them defeat ASA and Harcum, the Mustangs arrived at the District tournament in Baltimore last weekend with one thing in mind: winning. However, unable to find their rhythm, a slow start to their play left them down five points against Baltimore City Community College at halftime. A quick huddle later, and the Monroe men rallied to put on a stellar second-half performance that ultimately catapulted them to a 71-61 victory and — crucially — the opportunity to return to the nationals for the first time since 2012.
"This accomplishment is particularly special for this team as they have achieved so much in a relatively short time together," said Coach
Jeff Brustad, "No one has settled into their 'comfort zone.' We returned only two players from last year's team, added transfers, moved up Junior Varsity players and completed the roster with freshmen players. It's been a fantastic learning experience for all involved; they've really strengthened all aspects of their play and exhibited true teamwork to achieve results."
The road to the nationals for the Monroe Mustangs Men's team has not been an easy one but, despite myriad challenges, the team collectively found a way to persevere and overcome the odds. A season-ending knee injury sustained by sophomore forward
Khalifa Ndiaye during the inaugural weeks of play represented a huge blow to the team. However, not to be defeated, the Mustangs adjusted their strategy and other players subsequently stepped up their performance during the first half of the season to fill the undeniable void created by Ndiaye's absence. Fortunately, as the season's second half commenced, the Mustangs were able to draft in a player whose arrival provided them with that missing presence on the offensive and defensive end: Westchester Community College transfer Joel Angus III.
"The addition of Joel gave us that much-needed spark, and cemented us as a team as we began our strong run towards the Nationals," said Assistant Coach
Dana Warner.
Joel Angus III unquestionably made an impression on the court this year and, as a result, was one of two Monroe starters designated as an All-Region player. Teammate
Thomas Rivera also earned the accolade, while simultaneously clinching the title of Region tournament MVP. And, deserving of enormous credit, head coach
Jeff Brustad received his seventh Region XV Coach of the Year award to cap what has been a demanding, but rewarding, regular season.
The 24-8 Monroe men will tip off in the NJCAA Division I National Championship on Tuesday March 17
th at 12:00 noon CT (1:00pm ET) against 11
