Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | by Gary Axelbank

Mustangs win in NJ, split in Rhode Island

Injuries take their toll

The Monroe Mustangs lost maybe their best player (Khalifa Ndaiye) due to a knee injury just before the season and this weekend they traveled to Rhode Island a bit banged up, missing a few players.  Though they had made a fine mid-season addition with top-notch transfer, Joel Angus (form Westchester CC),  it wasn't enough to avoid a mixed-bag weekend.  Coming off a 71-59 defeat of Union on Thursday, the Mustangs split their weekend at CCRI, losing 80-71 to Genesee on Saturday and defeating host CCRI 69-58 on Sunday.  Monroe's record is 12-6 on the season.

"We can't have any excuses," said Coach Jeff Brustad.  "Whoever is on the floor has to play well and we didn't get it done on Saturday, but did on Sunday.  We keep working hard and stay focused and we'll be all right."

Thomas Rivera had 16 points against Union on 4/6 shooting.  Will Tavares had 14.  He was 5/8 from the field as Monroe shot 58.1% as a team.

Rivera again was high man in the Genesee game, scoring 17 points and dishing for five assists.

The CCRI game featured a coming out party of sorts for Angus.  The 6'7" sophomore from Brooklyn had 18 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.  Tavares also notched 18 points and he had six assists.

Monroe played the weekend without three injured guards, Jaelyn Benton, Shakeem Wilson, and Maurice Hart.
