If you looked at the Monroe Mustangs' men's basketball team's first two games of this 2014-15 season, you could very well have begun to write-off the year. But after dropping their first two, the Mustangs have been using their depth and versatility in a nifty seven-game winning streak that has righted the ship and put their season record at 7-2 as they enter December.
This past weekend, they downed tournament host Hagerstown 72-61 with a big second half on Saturday, and then vanquished Allegany 89-66 on Sunday.
"We're starting to get contributions from a wide range of our people," said Coach
Jeff Brustad. "We are certainly not where we want to be yet because you want consistency up and down the lineup, but our guys are starting to see what they can accomplish if they focus and work at it."
Rhode Island freshman
Will Tavares emerged with his best game as a Mustang against the Hawks. He had 20 points on 8/14 shooting including a couple of three-pointers. He also had seven rebounds.
The score was tied at the half (24-24), but Monroe blew it open in the second period. In fact, Taveras had 14 of his points in that half.
It was the Mustangs second win second win over the Hawks this season. .
They beat Hagerstown in the Mustang Invitational a couple of weeks ago.
Against Allegany on Sunday,
Jaylen Benton was on fire. The sophomore guard from Ohio shot 8/11 from the field including four from the arc on his way to 22 points.
