The Monroe Mustangs football team got a much-needed win on the road on Saturday, defeating Louisburg in North Carolina in overtime, 20-17. The winning score came on a TD after the Hurricanes drew first blood in the extra session with a field goal. Monroe answered in two plays: a 24-yard pass to get the ball on the one-yard line and a TD plunge by freshman
Devauntey Ellis.
The victory breaks Monroe's three-game losing streak and puts them in position to do what they did last, year, finish strong. They're now 2-3 on the season. They went on a six-game streak to finish 7-3 a year ago.
"I thought the team did well to cover come adversity, injuries, and the challenge of playing so far away from home," said Coach
Terry Karg. "We played a lot of different guys who performed well and as a result, we were able to take the long bus ride home with a satisfying win."
Monroe answered a first quarter Louisburg field goal with a three-yard TD run by Ellis. With the score Monroe 7-6 in the third quarter, sophomore
Jaquan Spann hauled in a TD pass from freshman QB
Nickolas Bynkoski and Monroe had a 14-6 lead.
Louisburg tied the score with a 30-yard fumble return for a TD (and conversion), which set up the overtime heroics.
"I'm really happy for the program to get this win after the short losing streak," Coach Karg said. "We have to prepare now for another tough game against a 5-0 team (Hudson Valley) who are nationally ranked (#20). We definitely look forward to the challenge."
