New York, NY – The Monroe University men's indoor track and field team competed at the Dr. Sander Invitational this weekend with multiple athletes recording personal best times at the event.
After an impressive season debut at the Ramapo Invitational last weeke, freshman
Abraham Saywon ran a personal best time of 7.54 in the 60m dash. Saywon also recorded a time of 24.48 in the 200m dash.
Freshmen
Anthony Barrett and
Elijah Carswell put together career-best performances in the 400m, with Barrett recording a time of 51.65 and Carswell logging a time of 54.43.
Sophomore
Dwayne Fleming shined at the Dr. Sander Invitational with a third place finished in the seeded section of the 200m. He clocked in at 21.79 in the event. Freshman
Cleon Joseph ran a time of 23.23 in the 200m.
Middle distance specialist in sophomore
Tinashe Bure ran his first ever 400m with a time of 50.90. Freshman
Christian Gabriel joined Bure in the 400m, running the event in 51.24 in his season debut.
Freshman
Felixon Elubin ran in the both the 60m and 200m, clocking in at 7.78 and 25.09, respectively. Fellow freshmen
Micah McHardy and
Davionn Thomas ran in the 60m as well, clocking in at 7.94 and 7.72, respectively.
McHardy competed in the long jump at the invitational too, jumping a distance of 4.99m. His teammates in freshman
Elijah Upsher and
Joel Bennett recorded distances of 4.24m and 5.61m, respectively, in the event.
The Mustangs wrapped up the two-day event with their first distance medley of the season, in which they recorded a time of 10:21.78, narrowly missing the qualifying standards for NJCAA nationals.
Sophomore
Siyabonga Mbatha kicked off the first leg at the 1200m before freshman
Modou Sanneh ran the 400m leg. The third leg was run by freshman
Nkanyezi Ziqubu, who ran the 800m. The anchor was held down by sophomore
Banele Mkabela, who ran the mile leg.
Monroe has have a busy week ahead as they take part in the METS Indoor Championships on Staten Island on Friday, January 31, and the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, MA, on Friday, January 31, and Saturday, February 1.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
