Men's Indoor Track And Field Completes Day One Of NJCAA Nationals

Lubbock, TX – The Monroe University men's indoor track and field team earned a pair of finalists in freshman Modou Sanneh and sophomore Tinashe Bure during day one of the 2025 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Sports Performance Center.

Sanneh ran in the third heat of the 400m and finished first, crossing the finish line at 46.91. It was the third fastest time of the day, helping him advance to the 400m final on Saturday.
 
Bure, after narrowly missing the finals of the 800m with a tenth-place finish and a time of 1:53.11, had a bounce-back performance in the 1000m, running a 2:30.26 to advance to Saturday's final.
 
The Mustangs began their day with the distance medley relay. The team of sophomores Siyabonga Mbatha and Banele Mkabela, and freshmen Anthony Barrett and Nkanyezi Ziqubu ran a time of 10:17.01 in the event.
 
Sanneh and sophomore Dwayne Fleming both had great performances in the 200m. Fleming ran a personal-best time of 21.33, which narrowly missed the final. Sanneh continued his impressive day by winning his heat with a time of 21.49, which is a personal-best for him as well. Fleming also ran a time of 49.41 in the 400m.
 
The men's 1000m run wrapped up the day on the men's side on Friday. In addition to Bure, Mbatha  and Mkabela both ran in this event. Mbatha ran a time of 2:32.79 and Mkabela ran a time of 2:32.97.
 
Saturday marks the final day of nationals for the Mustangs. The team of Fleming, freshman Cleon Joseph, Barrett and sophomore Junior Grant will run in the 4x400m relay, while Sanneh (400m), Mkabela (mile) and Bure (1000m) will each compete in their respective finals.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
