NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 18, 2024 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV baseball team fell in a close matchup with the University of Mount Saint Vincent JV team, 8-6, Monday afternoon at Dick Caswell Field.
Â
The Mustangs fell into a 3-0 hole quickly in Monday's matchup when the Dolphins put together a big first-inning rally. They later began to work their way back in the bottom of the fourth.
Melvin Laracuente led off the inning with a single.
Omar Taveras later singled as well, and then the two baserunners executed a double steal to put runners on second and third.
Ronald Melo then brought in Laracuente on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Â
Monroe put together a crucial rally in the sixth.
Louis Paula hit a leadoff triple to get things going, and then immediately came home on an RBI single by Laracuente to make it a one-run game.
Joshua Aquino made it three straight singles to put two runners on with nobody out. After the next two batters failed to reach base, a walk by
Johamile Camilo loaded the bases. Vianney Goris then singled into left, plating two runs to push the Mustangs ahead, 4-3.
Â
That lead unfortunately did not last long, as the Dolphins put two runs on the board in the top of the seventh to go ahead, 5-4. The visitors rallied again in the eighth with three more runs, eventually taking an 8-4 advantage into the ninth.
Â
Jeurys Cuevas tried to get things going with a one-out double to right. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home on another that was also a dropped third strike that put Paula on first. Paula stole second, and then moved to third on a ground out by Laracuente. A wild pitch allowed Paula to come home, but that proved to be the final run of the game, as the Mustangs fell by just two runs.
Â
Laracuente finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI in Monday's matchup. Cuevas hit 2-for-3 with a run and a double. Paula tripled, scored twice and knocked in a run in a 1-for-4 effort. Goris plated two in a 1-for-4 outing. Aquino scored a run after hitting 1-for-5.
Omar Taveras went 1-for-3, while
Malik Sulley finished 1-for-4.
Daikys Vargas took the loss in relief for Monroe on Monday.
Â
The Mustangs are back in action this Friday, March 22, when they host Dominican University JV at Dick Caswell Field.
