Bronx, NY – Sophomore Attoya Harvey won both the Queensborough Invitational and the NJCAA Region 15 Division I Championship on Sunday as the Monroe University women's cross country team competed at Van Cortlandt Park.
By winning the Region 15 Division I Championship, the Mustangs qualified for the 2024 NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Richmond, VA in November. This marks the team's tenth straight Region 15 Championship appearance.
Harvey took first place among 144 runners in Sunday's event. She clocked in with a time of 20:53.30, which marked her second consecutive victory in the 5k.
Freshman Tanesia Gardiner placed sixth with a personal-best time of 22:11.00. Fellow freshman Stephanie Delouis came in 68th place, clocking in at 28:42.30. Both Gardiner and Delouis finished on the Region 15 podium for their performances.
Rounding out the Mustang competitors, sophomore Julihanna Johnson finished in 97th place and freshman Aleisha Clarke came in 111th place.
The Mustangs will next compete at the St. Joseph's Long Island Invitational on Saturday, October 19, at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park, NY.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
