Melvin Council Jr. was the leading scorer for the Monroe Mustangs men's basketball team in a 1-1 opening weekend at the Statesmen Classic, hosted by Richard Bland College. Council had a team-high 20 points in Friday's season-opening victory over Richard Bland. He then registered 19 points in Saturday's loss to Brunswick Community College. Council averaged 19.5 points and 5.0 rebounds, while shooting 51.5 percent from the field over the weekend.
