Men's Outdoor Track And Field Sees Ten-Year School Record Fall At Penn Relays

Philadelphia, PA – The Monroe University men's outdoor track and field team dethroned a ten-year school record this weekend at the prestigious Penn Relays. Freshmen Anthony Barrett and Modou Sanneh, and sophomores Dwayne Fleming and Tinashe Bure eclipsed the previous 1600m relay record that had stood since 2015.

The previous record of 3:12.83 held by the quartet of Christopher Spellman, Kurt Modeste, Keron Charles and Phillip Marcelle was surpassed by the new quartet with a time of 3:12.47. The new record inserted the quartet into the NJCAA national championships and placed them in Saturday's final for the event in which they placed seventh overall.

Barrett opened the record-breaking performance with a time of 49.84. Fleming then followed with a time of 47.51 before Bure legged out a time of 48.41. Sanneh was the anchor leg, recording a team-high time of 46.51 to secure the record and national qualification.

The same four ran in the sprints medley relay prior to their performance in the 1600m relay, winning the event in heat one with a time of 3:24.61, placing them tenth overall.

Fleming and Barrett led off the event with performances in the 200m leg. The third leg, ran by Sanneh, was the 400m leg of the medley relay. Bure then anchored the event with a solid performance in the 800m leg.

The Mustangs have one more regular season meet before heading to Hutchinson, KS. Next weekend their final tune up will be in the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton University.
