Baltimore, MD – The Monroe University men's outdoor track and field team competed at the Morgan State Legacy this weekend to mark the halfway point of the season.
Sophomore
Dwayne Fleming got the event started with appearances in the 100m and 200m dash. Fleming clocked in at 10.79 in the 100m before placing eighth overall in the 200m with a time of 21.59.
Freshman
Micah McHardy and sophomore
Joel Bennett joined Fleming in the 100m with times of 12.48 — a personal best for McHardy — and 11.89. McHardy added a first-time appearance in the 400m too, clocking in at 56.75, while Bennett earned a season-best 5.77m jump in the long jump.
Three Mustangs ran in the 400m hurdles on Saturday, with freshman
Anthony Barrett proving to be the top Monroe finisher with a time of 58.03, a collegiate best for the Newburgh, NY, native. Freshmen
Elijah Carswell and
Elijah Upsher both made their debuts in the event with times of 1:03.00 and 1:09.57, respectively.
The 100m hurdles then saw two more Mustangs compete, with Barrett finishing with a time of 15.98 and Carswell running a time of 17.08.
Sophomore
Siyabonga Mbatha and freshman
Nkanyezi Ziqubu competed in the 1500m, with Mbatha finishing sixth overall with a time of 4:02.01. Ziqubu — who also ran the 800m with a time of 2:03.41 — finished the 1500m with a time of 4:19.43.
Closing out the day, sophomore
Banele Mkabela placed second overall in the 5000m with a time of 15:13.40.
The Mustangs will next compete in the prestigious Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, PA. The three-day meet will begin on Thursday.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
