Kaliyah Jones Of Women's Indoor Track And Field Sets School Record At Garden State Invitational

New York, NY – Freshman Kaliyah Jones of the Monroe University women's indoor track and field team achieved a new school record in the 300m at the Garden State Invitational on Saturday to highlight a terrific day for the team.

Jones ran clocked in at 40.46, which shattered the previous Mustang record held by Teena Mobley (43.52) from back in 2014. After 11 years, Jones now stands alone atop the record books for Monroe in the 300m.

In addition to Jones's record-breaking performance, three Mustangs qualified for nationals, putting the individual mark for their trip to Lubbock, TX, in two weeks at seven participants across nine events.

Freshmen Joy Fridah Jepleting and Tanesia Gardiner qualified for nationals in the mile run and 800m, respectively. Jepleting placed second overall in the mile, running a personal best time of 5:08.92. Gardiner also placed second overall in her event, achieving a personal best time as well with a time of 2:19.50.

Rounding out the Mustang qualifiers was sophomore Attoya Harvey, who placed first overall in the 600m with a time of 1:35.20 to achieve qualification standards for nationals.

Freshmena Jazmiene Ferguson and sophomore Julihanna Johnson ran the 300m alongside Jones, clocking in at 44.13 and 45.41, respectively.

In the 60m, sophomore Kettia Ambrose placed second overall and ran a personal best time of 7.77. Freshman Brinel Thomas also ran a 7.77 in prelims, which is a personal best. Her final time later that evening was clocked in at 7.82.

The Mustangs have one final tune up before heading to Texas for nationals. The Fastrack Last Chance Meet will take place on Friday, February 28, at 1:00 pm at Ocean Breeze on Staten Island.
