Boston, MA – The Monroe University women's indoor track and field team competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday, with the medley relay team highlighting a solid day for the Mustangs by clinching a spot at NJCAA nationals.
The team of sophomores
Attoya Harvey and
Kettia Ambrose, and freshmen
Tanesia Gardiner and
Joy Fridah Jepleting clocked in at 12:15.90 to earn a spot in Lubbock, TX. Their nationals-clinching performance comes a day following the men's medley relay team achieved the same feat.
In addition to the medley relay qualifiers, the Mustangs had four national qualifiers on the day.
Freshman
Kaliyah Jones got her day started with an indoor personal-best time of 57.22, which qualifies her for nationals. Harvey and Gardiner solidified their appearances in Lubbock in the 1000m. Harvey clocked in at 2:58.62, while Gardiner recorded a time of 3:08.14.
Rounding out the Mustang qualifiers was freshman
Brinel Thomas in the long jump. Thomas recorded a personal-best mark of 5.66m.
Ambrose rebounded from the medley relay event with a time of 57.10 in the 400m. Sophomore
Julihanna Johnson also competed in the event, recording a time of 1:05.92.
Freshman
Nthabiseng Komane ran a time of 3:24.05 in the 1000m, joining Harvey and Gardiner in the event. Freshman Jazmien Ferguson competed in two events. She ran an 8.59 60m dash before running in the 200m race and recording a time of 29.27.
Lastly, Jepleting ran a time of 5:16.92 in the mile run, narrowly missing national qualification standards.
The Mustangs will have one final tune up before nationals on Friday, February 21, when they take part in the Garden State Invitational
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
