Staten Island, NY – The Monroe University women's indoor track and field team opened its season at the Wagner College Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon. Sophomore
Kettia Ambrose shined for the Mustangs placing first overall in the women's 500m.
Ambrose had never run the 500m prior to Friday, but she made an immediate impact for the Mustangs. Her time of 1:17.81 earned her first overall in the event and a qualifying spot for the national championships in the 600m.
Several Mustangs made their collegiate debuts at the Wagner College Invitational. Freshmen
Jazmiene Ferguson and
Aleisha Clarke earned times of 28.67 and 28.94, respectively, in the 200m. Clarke also made the finals of the 60m dash and placed eighth overall with a time of 8.40.
Ferguson recorded a time of 8.64 in the 60m dash.
Cross-country standout sophomore
Attoya Harvey recorded a time of 10:58.17 in the 3000m.
The Mustangs will next compete on Friday, January 10 at the St. Thomas Spartan Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
