Staten Island, NY – The Monroe University women's indoor track and field team clinched another NJCAA national qualifier on Friday at the St. Thomas Spartan Invite at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, with freshman
Kaliyah Jones punching her ticket to Lubbock, TX, with her performance in the 500m.
Jones shined on Friday, kicking off a phenomenal day for the Mustangs in their second meet of the young season. The freshman took fifth place overall in the 500m event with a time of 1:18.44, which qualifies her for the 600m at nationals.
Jones joins sophomore
Kettia Ambrose in locking in a spot at nationals after Ambrose earned her spot last week at the Wagner College Invitational.
Sophomore
Julihanna Johnson also made her season debut in the 500m, running a personal best 1:30.07 in the event.
In the 200m dash, Ambrose and Johnson recorded times of 25.23 and 28.37, respectively. Ambrose also ran in the 60m for the first time this season, earning fifth place with a personal best time of 7.84. She narrowly missed qualification for nationals in the same event.
Sophomore
Attoya Harvey also narrowly missed nationals qualification in her first mile run of the season. She placed sixth overall with a time of 5:14.55 in the event.
Freshman
Aleisha Clarke recorded a time of 9.69 in the 60m race, while freshman
Jazmiene Ferguson ran the 400m in 1:04.52.
The Mustangs will make their first appearance at The Armory in Manhattan next Friday, January 19, when they compete in the Ramapo Opener. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
