Monroe College Track & Field Announces Additions to Coaching Staff

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 5, 2022 – Monroe College Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach Shirvon Greene has announced the addition of Jerome Robinson, Monica Stevens, Charez Weste '11 and Sasha Marston '14 to the coaching staff of the Monroe College Mustangs track and field program ahead of the 2023 indoor and outdoor seasons. Robinson and Stevens join the Mustangs after most recently working with the Monroe Express, while Weste and Marston are both Monroe College alumni who competed for the Mustangs during their time as students at the college.

"It's indeed a pleasure having all four of these coaches on board," said Greene. "This brings us a very strong coaching staff that are not only experienced, but very versatile in what they do."

Robinson joins the Mustangs as a specialist in short sprints and jumps. He brings decades of experience with him to New Rochelle, having begun his coaching career in 1999 after a prestigious collegiate career. Robinson has coached at various levels around the New York Metro area, beginning at Lehman College in 1999. He has also had stints at Bronx Community College, Globe Institute of Technology, Queens College, the College of Staten Island and Bloomfield College before more recently working with the Monroe Express. Robinson also coached at Central Park Track Club New Balance from 2010-16.

Robinson's coaching accolades includes seeing many athletes earn All-American honors and national championships at various levels. He has also coached a number of Olympic athletes and national champions at the professional level. Robinson's track and field career was prominent in its own right, as he was an All-American as a college student-athlete. Robinson is still a world-ranked Masters athlete in the long jump, and has won national championships and several medals at the World Masters.

"Coach Robinson brings an array of experience and no doubt in my mind that he will lead our short sprints and jump program to higher heights," said Greene.

Monica Stevens joins the Mustangs as their Recruiting Coordinator in 2022-23. Stevens most recently served as the first and only head coach of the Monroe Express cross country and track and field programs. Stevens coached 20 seasons at Bronx Community College prior to her time with the Express, as well as 13 years of experience coaching at Washington Irving High School. At BCC, Stevens coached 25 NJCAA All-Americans, 10 CUNY Champions, five National Champions and helped numerous more secure scholarships to four-year institutions. Stevens was also named the NJCAA Coach of the Year in 2008. Stevens also coached the NJCAA Div. III Outdoor Track & Field Champions in the long jump (Lamoy Duffus) and both the men's 4x800 relay and 4x400 relay in 2022.

"Coach Stevens brings years of experience in the PSAL and will add a dynamic to our recruiting team that will assist us in our goals," said Greene.

Weste has been a part of the Monroe College family since coming to Monroe in 2009 to complete her undergraduate studies. Not only was she a member of the Monroe College track and field program at that time, she was also very involved around the college, working as a resident assistant, and was a member of NABA and various other groups around campus. Since graduating from Monroe with her bachelor's degree, and later her master's degree, Weste has remained with Monroe College, working with Student Activities, Residence Life, and Academics throughout her tenure at the college. Weste began competing in track and field at eight years old and competed for Antigua and Barbuda prior to her time as a student-athlete at Monroe.

"Coach Weste is a very dynamic coach that will assist with our women cross country and middle distance teams," said Greene. "Being a former athlete herself, Weste adds a dynamic to our unit that will not only motivate, but put us and set us up for great success in the seasons ahead."

Marston enjoyed a prosperous athletic career at Monroe from 2012-14. At the end of her time at Monroe, Marston held numerous throwing records for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, and still holds the Mustangs' outdoor discus throw record to this day. After graduating from Monroe with an associate's degree in medical administration, Marston continued her collegiate career at Mississippi State University, where she set the team's long-standing discus throw record in her first season. She then concluded her career as a student-athlete at Grand Canyon University, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in general psychology, and later with a master's in business administration. Marston was not only a stand-out athlete, she also excelled in the classroom, having been named to the President's and Dean's List, while also becoming a member of the Honorable Society of Collegiate Scholars in 2015-16.

"Coach Marston is an absolute one-of-a-kind talent who brings a dynamic to our throwing and field event teams that will lead us to do and achieve great things," said Greene.

The Mustangs will begin competition for the 2023 NJCAA indoor track and field season in January, concluding with the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. from March 3-4. The outdoor season will follow shortly after, with the 2023 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships taking place from May 18-20 in Hobbs, N.M.
