NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 22, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV baseball team dropped a 16-4 decision to Keystone College JV Friday afternoon at Dick Caswell Field. The Mustangs fall to 2-5 overall, while the Giants improve to 4-1.
Â
The Giants struck first on Friday, scoring in their first at-bat of the day. Keystone loaded the bases without an out, setting up RJ Gouldsbury for a two-RBI single to right, leaving the Giants with a quick 2-0 advantage.
Â
The Mustangs were able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first.
Jonas Marte singled and
Javier Ortiz was hit by a pitch to get two runners quickly on base.
Jaylen Kelley then hit into a fielder's choice that resulted in Ortiz being thrown out at second, but the Mustangs still had runners on the corners. With two outs, a passed ball allowed Marte to score from third, making it a 2-1 ballgame after one.
Â
Two big rallies across the next two frames, including four runs in the second and five runs in the third, put the Giants ahead, 11-1.
Â
The Mustangs fought back in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs,
Eddy Vicioso was entered into the game to hit and play first. Vicioso made good of his first at-bat, slamming a no-doubt home run over the fence in left-center field to make it an 11-2 game.
Jason DeJesus kept the momentum going with a single to left.
Nick Simonenko then singled to right-center, and an error allowed him to go all the way to third and DeJesus to score, making it an 11-3 ballgame. Two batters later, an error on a ground ball by Marte brought Simonenko around to score and get the Mustangs within seven at 11-4.
Â
The Giants once again strung together a big inning, plating five runs in the top of the fifth to eventually pick up a run-rule victory after five frames.
Â
Patrick Adamski was awarded the win for Keystone after coming on in relief in the fourth inning.
Paul Delgado shouldered the loss for Monroe to fall to 0-1.
Â
Vicioso finished 1-for-2 with his fourth-inning solo homer. Marte, DeJesus and Simonenko each hit 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Bryant Perdomo went 1-for-1 in the game.
Â
The Mustangs will look to bounce back tomorrow, March 23, when they visit Middlesex County College in Edison, N.J. Game 1 is set to begin at 12 p.m.
