John Garbar

Jonathan Garbar

Coach Garbar has been involved in the game of soccer since the age of 5. Growing up in New Jersey, and Colombia South America, for Coach Garbar soccer was as much a cultural experience as it was an athletic one.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Delaware, Coach Garbar moved to New York City to pursue a career in education and athletics. After earning his Master’s Degree from Pace University in 2007 he decided to make coaching his career. His first experience as a Head Coach began at Benjamin Banneker Academy, where he coached the men’s and women’s program for three seasons. The women’s program went undefeated and were two-time division champions winning in both the ‘A,’ and ‘B’ divisions. The men’s program went on to enjoy its best record in school history and most importantly, graduated every student athlete.

Throughout his limited off-season time, Coach Garbar has received his NSCAA licenses and spends time in the Caribbean and South America working with various clubs and academies.

After Coach Garbar’s final season at Benjamin Banneker Academy (2008), he joined the Monroe College men’s soccer coaching staff and became first assistant to head coach Marcus Dibernardo, who was brought on the year before with the purposes of building a competitive program. Since then, the Mustangs have become a powerhouse.  In Coach Garbar’s second season as the Men’s First Assistant and the program’s first in D1 NJCAA, the Mustang men finished #4 in the nation.  The following year, the men continued their progress, and finished #2 in the nation.  After 3 Regional Championships, 2 District Championships, and over 45 student athletes moving on to professional careers, D1 or D2 NCAA institutions, Coach Garbar was handed the reigns to the Mustang’s women’s soccer program in 2012. In his first year as head coach, the women’s program made the transition from Division 3, to Division 1 NJCAA and finished the regular season with a record of 13-0, graduated 2 All Americans, and are currently ranked #8 in NSCAA’s national rankings.

Coach Garbar believes that women’s soccer at Monroe is a tradition in the making, and is being developed into one of the most premier athletic and academic programs in the nation.

“Our Program stands on three core principles: Passion, Preparation, and Progress.  It’s who we are, and what we represent, as individuals and as a family.

For every Mustang, soccer and education is more than a game, and more than a sport. It’s a lifestyle, and one that we are extremely proud of and committed to,” he said.
