Avon Samuels had an excellent start to her collegiate career with a pair of impressive efforts in the Mustangs' first two meets of the indoor season. In Friday's Historically Black Colleges and Universities Battle, Samuels earned an NJCAA National Championship qualifying time in the 500-meter dash with one of the most remarkable performances of the day. She took first place in the race with not only a qualifying time, but a new school and meet record time of 1:15.51. Samuels also earned an NJCAA qualifying time in the 400-meter dash in Saturday's Great Dane Invitational, finishing in 58.89 for her second qualifying time in as many events through two meets.
